Western pine beetle (Dendroctonus brevicomis) is a bark beetle that infests the boles of >6” dbh ponderosa pine trees. This beetle can cause tree mortality in mature and second- growth ponderosa and outbreaks usually occur in trees weakened by drought, fire, root disease, soil.

Important Habitats and Outbreak Dynamics: Western pine beetle is most active in locations east of the Cascades crest and in southwestern Oregon.

Activity is rare in other regions west of the Cascades crest. It is especially prevalent in very dry areas, and may cause more ponderosa pine mortality in these areas than mountain pine beetle.

The western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte, can aggressively attack and kill ponderosa and Coulter pine trees of all ages and vigor classes that are 6 inches (15 cm) or larger in diameter, including apparently healthy trees. The range of Mountain pine beetle (MPB) extends across all 11 western states and western Canada.

In Oregon, it is distributed in pure and mixed pine stands mostly east of the Cascades. Biology In Oregon, there is typically one generation of MPB per year. Larvae or adults may overwinter. Adults are mm. Adults attack around July and excavate. Bark beetles are well described in terms of life history and general ecology for the six beetle species of concern in eastern Oregon and Washington, USA: Douglas fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae; mountain pine beetle, D. ponderosae; western pine beetle, D.

Insects are typically drawn to a given area by available food supply, weather, environmental factors (pollution, etc), water supply, mating patterns, etc and can be territorial.

The western pine beetle initially attacks midway up the tree, but the first sign of at-tack may often be predaceous checkered beetles seen at eye level scurrying over the bark in search of western pine beetle prey.
